In the second half of the 19th century, the clinic assumed a central role in medical education. In particular, within the German university model, medical teaching was redefined around direct experience with patient and the integration of clinical practice and laboratory. This study analyzes the influence of this model on the reorganization of medical education in Italy. In particular, the University of Padua provides a privileged perspective for understanding the dynamics of the circulation and transformation of European pedagogical models, as well as the impulses for scientific renewal in late 19th century medicine.
